2009 has been a little lean as far as gigs go. However we have had two great ones with Kristen leading the band at shows hosted by our friends at Port District Football Club. Saturday the 15th August saw C6 play at another local footy club this time North Haven for their last senior game of the year. It also saw another change in the line up although this time it was the return of our original singer and co founding member Tammie to join Kristen on vocals. It also saw C6 become 7!
The show was well supported by our loyal and cherished friends once again as well as a great turn out from the club making it a very special night for the band. It’s fair to say the girls sounded fantastic together a fact borne out by the many favorable comments made to various band members after the show. We’ve never had it so good!

Casual Six came together in late 2003 after Phil’s father in law suggested the members of Phil’s old band Oyster Poison reunite for his 60th Birthday Bash. This was not to be, as original Oyster Poison drummer Noel wasn’t too keen. However, further discussions with fellow Oyster Poison member Ian (Bass) showed that there could be some interest in forming a new garage band.

Another mate Paul, a keen drummer (though never having played in a band) showed interest and suggested a jam session at his house for one Saturday afternoon. From there the invitation was extended to Craig who had extensive experience playing the LeFevre Peninsula pubs and clubs with a cover band known as The Lickers in the late 80’s early 90’s. All that was left now was a lead vocalist.

Phil and Craig could both sing but didn’t necessarily want the job full time with playing guitar as well. So, having heard another friend Tammie sing once or twice (not too badly) at Karaoke and of course lip sync into her Vodka Cruiser bottle on a number of occasions the boys asked if she would be interested and the band was born.

A bundle of nerves for most at the first outing saw a number of Cruiser’s and Beer’s knocked down for some dutch courage and Paul’s other half at the time Eloise joined in to help out with the back up vocals.

The first outing for what was known then as the Big Cuppa Band or Beer o' Clockers was in the back yard of a mates place for his birthday the very next day after just one jam session.

The group jammed weekly together to prepare for the 60th Birthday they had united for and played a great show. Even though it was to be a one off event, the fun, enjoyment and requests for further gigs saw the group continue. As time went on Eloise chose to leave the band to focus on family commitments. Not long after this, a work colleague of Paul’s, Glenn joined in as a keyboardist. This line up was steady until circumstances took Tam from us for a few months in 2009 and we secured the services of Kristen who appeared to have no problem singing with a bunch of old farts. And sing she can! Tam rejoined her beloved Sixers later that year which gave us the luxury of two fabulous singers to front the band. We're not worthy! :-)
Here now are the seven members who make up “Casual Six”. Who cares if we cant add up!

Who are we?

Casual Six are a group of friends (from Adelaide, SA) who formed a garage band playing covers for a bit of fun in 2003. Yes, there are six of us and we are extremely casual about it all. It's basically just a hobby for us, but since starting we have played at a number of sporting clubs, parties and other private functions, we all enjoy it and will continue to keep playing whilst people want us to and whilst it continues to be fun for us.

The band consists of Kristen (vocals), Tammie (vocals), Craig (guitar and vocals), Paul (drums), Phil (guitar and vocals), Glenn (keyboard), Ian (bass).
We cover songs from the 80s, 90s as well as current tunes and a few classic oldies thrown in to the mix. Our current list includes Pink’s “Cuz I Can”, Green Days “When I Come Around”, Kim Wilds “Kids in America”, The Stereophonics “Dakota”, Dragons “April Sun in Cuba”, Pat Benatars “Hit me with your best shot”, Three Doors Down “Kryptonite”, Wolf Mothers “Joker and The Thief”.

Everyone knows I love Natalie B so Rogue Traders of course and Foo Fighters, Midnight Oil, The Corrs, Jewel and at the moment listening to lots of P!nk and My Chemical Romance.

As most of you know, our lead singer Tammie left gracefully to concentrate on other interests. Meanwhile we were deciding the fate of the band and it was a group decision to keep going and with Tammie's wishes we gratefully kept the groups name.

So with a glimmer of hope and some thought for the future of Casual Six, a suggestion was made to try out Kristen Newlyn, Craigs (Tilii's) daughter.
This soon turned out to be a great idea and with a different sound we forged ahead with some of our favs - it seems some of these were penned long before Kristen was born, but that didn't matter she still had a go and sounded great!

It wasn't long before we had our first outing with Kristen at the PORT ADELAIDE DISTRICTS FOOTBALL CLUB on Saturday 4th April...what can we say but for a first timer to front a crowd of 'participating patrons'... it was nothing short of brilliant!!! As she eased into her first set with dad proudly looking on, the crowd soon warmed to her and kept the place rocking the whole night and from the rest of us Kristen, we say Well Done!!

Saturday 27th June saw Casual Six play the Port District Football Club Black and White Ball at the Semaphore Palais. With a successful day on the ground the club was ready to party at their annual function. This is the second show Casual Six has done for Port District this year and again the crowd rocked! Kristen’s second outing with C6 proved a huge success again. We love playing for you guys and thanks again for having us!

September 13th 2008

North Haven Footy Club 13thSeptember. Thanks to all of our friends who helped make this night a success. The Big Cuppa gang were out in force for this very local show to support us and to wish Uncle Darky a happy birthday. From all reports they had a great night. Also thanks to the representatives from the Port Adelaide District Hockey Club who took leave from celebrations of their teams numerous grand final wins to join us again. Particularly Tammies Div6’9ers who won their first premiership together that very afternoon. Thanks to Sharon behind the bar who put in the effort to organise a range of special “Casual Six” themed cocktails. They appeared to work to great effect. And to Trudy for organising the event and Mark for trying to beat up some patronage late in the week.

Nothing like a show close to home especially when your friends come out in such numbers to support you. Such was Saturday night at Port District Football club. High on an A grade win the place was ready to rock.

DaSheilas pre-game nerves dissolved in a sea of enthused adulation as we launched into the first song. Sound man Vito had overcome some technical snags and no full sound check to provide what was relayed back to us one of the best sounds ever. With some trepidation Mileys' "See You Again" was given its first C6 public airing. DaSheila nailed it (it's one of her best) and the younger members of the crowd seemed more than pleased, so much so they would later join us on stage for a repeat performance.

After a good first set (first sets can be shaky if one isn't in the "zone") Vito again ran into problems with the background music from his CD. Without hesitation he rushed home and returned with his MP3 player to see things through. Champion effort.

The following sets were both received well with plenty of crowd participation. Tam and Craig carried the vocal duties though flawlessly, Bassman mastered the art of dancing and playing (that's like, two things at once!) without a hiccup and Beat Boy and Fingers seemed to relish the spotlight up on the stage riser. As is generally the routine enough was not enough and despite the bar closing there were request for a few more songs. I know we could play all night to such a generous and enthusiastic audience but there needs to be a balance between satisfying the partiers and not pissing off the people running the show so we finished off with around 4 or 5 encores.

Thanks to Port District and Craig Brown for inviting us down and all the party people and especially to our steadfast family members and friends whose support we never take for granted.

Another fantastic night for Casual Six with Karli and her parents showing us some "southern hospitality". The night wasn't without hiccups for us, but then that just adds to the entertainment value we reckon. Here it is the place to get the low down on latest gigs and how they went. Basically Casual Six like nothing more than having a good time and throwing a bit of stick at each other. Seeing as we ain't no Rock Stars we have our very own roving reporter that travels almost anywhere to see us play, he always has a kind word - but that's probably because he is a friend and also related to one of our members. Some of the comments may make no sense to some but others will get a good laugh.

An example of one past review below..............................................

PORT ADELAIDE HOCKEY CLUB GETS A DOSE OF SEX, DRUGS AND ROCK AND ROLL!!

Hyped up on Red Bulls and snakes, "Casual Six" were back to rock the Hockey
Club, arousing some of the crowd into fits of Passion!

Yes, "Casual Six", those highly polished, effervescent, musical afficiado's
of the Lefevre peninsula, were back again, by popular request, at the Port
Hockey Club.(Strangley enough however, those who requested this repeat
performance seemed to have failed to turn up!)

Crowds were down this time due to another musical performance at Bonython
Park involving fireworks. I'm sure Guy-Fawkes Wightman could have arranged
something to rival this, but the casualty rate may have been deemed
unacceptable.

Unfortunately on advice from my wife, I no longer take notes at the bands
gigs, as apparently I look like a wanker when I take out my pad and pen
during the performances. Therefore I apologize up front if my report "has
many omissions and contains much that is apocryphal, or at least wildly
inaccurate." Know that I am turning to the dark side of 40 my memory ain't
what it used to be.

After a late start, the band fired up with "Let me entertain you" to keep
the Robbie fans on side. This is always a great version, and I was
originally surprised to see many of the locals up and dancing straight
away.(I later found out however, that they had been drinking all afternoon,
and were in fact dancing before any music had started!)

The first set included all the old favourites, including "Just a Girl",
"Whip it" and "Turning Japanese", and a few newbie's in "Take me out" and
"Alone with you". All the vocals from Tammie "The Sheila", Phil "Da Man"
and Craig "the Anchor" where clear and strong and appears Phil wasn't just
sitting down the back making spit balls at his singing classes after all.
One of the locals, "Char" took control of the dance floor early, and took the
whole "Combat disco" to a new level (Sorry Heather, I think you've been
dethroned.) As the music stirred the passions, "Char" became overwhelmed,
grabbed Denise "Cartwheel" in a bear hug and gave her what could only be described as a tonsillectomy on the dance floor.
Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, "Char" was eventually red carded and
sent home after a successful spear tackle of one of her team-mates.

After a break, the band were back with a little "Calypso", and "Copperhead
Road", which Craig has made his own!. Tammie's vocals on "Kids in America"
had everyone singing along, and Phil belted out the married man's lament
"Gimme Head"(Phil always sings this with such sincerity).Two more newbie's
were added to this set, "Holiday" and "Nutbush". "Nutbush" seemed to throw
Noel (White man can't dance) Stubberfield into confusion, as he raced onto
the dance floor trying to stomp out some imaginary fire! Some more of the
old favourites followed and the set finishes up with the crowd participating
in "Am I ever gonna see your face again".

The final set, always the strongest, started with Tammie taking on "Way to
go", another newbie. One word to describe this, "OWNED". With this song and
"Voodoo Child" you have to ask the question, why battle the traffic to the
Sky Show to see "Rogue Traders" when you can get better versions from the
"Casual Six". Natalie Bassingthwaighte who??? Personally I've never liked
her since she lied to Carl about having his baby, and now that she's
flirting with Ned to stop Elle from going to Tassie, forget it!

Finally a version of "Pretty Vegas', which commanded an encore performance,
took the band to a new level. As Craig once stated at a previous
performance, "I think we nailed it".

I think they did!
